Father Prince's Weekly Reflection
Reflection for the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Woody Guthrie was a great American songwriter and folk hero. Woody made his living and his legend during the depression, doing some hard travelling on the rails to stir the hearts and chronicle the stories of some of the folks he met scrambling to survive during some of the hardest times. Yet it wasn’t depressing rhythm he left us, even when we remember his long battle with a slow killing disease. It’s the words he sang out, like these from “This land is your land”:
Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking my freedom highway:
Nobody living can make me turn back,
This land was made for you and me.”
Woody was a modern day psalmist – a bit of a poet, a prophet of promise amidst doom and gloom. There is a link between Woody and the disciples in Mark’s gospel today. Off go the disciples, sent only God knows where – up one back road and down the other; not much to go on but wits and guts. Let’s slap this first mission together with some spit, glue, shoe polish and bailing wire and let’s see if the good news flies. It’s flying the same way Jesus did, by the seat of his pants; without food, baggage, or money. They seem to have done pretty well, curing the sick and confronting the demons in the land. The spirit and enthusiasm made these gospel-vagabonds mercurial and attractive. Many came to taste the good news of the Master through the evangelizing of the disciples.
With footloose troubadours criss-crossing today’s readings, it’s no surprise that Paul chimes in with a lovely hymn. He begins his letter praising “God for bestowing on us every blessing in Christ.” Here we are, much like the Ephesians, chosen for holiness, full of love, God’s very own brood. Through Christ’s own blood, we are brought back from evil and slavery, our sins forgiven. We’ve been given the wisdom for plumbing the mysteries, and the challenging task to bring all things to unity in Christ. Are we up to it? I should hope so. After all, we are the body of Christ alive on earth today. On this stuffy July weekend, maybe we can shake off the dust and dullness that have left us lethargic and soft. We can rouse ourselves to feel again the fresh burst of energy that the Word deserves. Gospel of Christ enlivens those back roads and urban alleyways, and feeds people hungry for salvation. We have the capacity to see this world as Jesus saw it, to live as Jesus lived, to love as Jesus loved. What else could we mean when we say, “Amen” to the Body and Blood of Christ at communion time? These hands and feet and hearts are now the saving flesh of Christ for the life of the world.

298. When did he institute this sacrament (Reconciliation)? The risen Lord instituted this sacrament on the evening of Easter when he showed himself to his apostles and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." (
John 20:22-23).

The call of Christ to conversion continue to resound in the lives of the baptized. Conversion is a continuing obligation for the whole Church. She is holy but includes sinners in her midst.
